Born in 1969 in Barnaul. He began studying music at the age of seven at the children's music school at the Barnaul Music College, where his mother brought him. One day, having heard a recording of Count Basie's orchestra, he discovered the world of jazz.
In 1984, he entered the piano department of the music college, put together his first jazz quintet and in January 1985 debuted with this ensemble at a jazz festival in Novosibirsk.
In 1995 he moved to Novosibirsk and actively joined the jazz life of the capital of Siberia - he recorded his first disc ("Silver Quintet" with Andrey Lobanov, Vladimir Timofeev, Dmitry Averchenkov and Vladimir Kirpichev), created ensembles (in 1996 Art Trio (Dmitry Averchenkov - double bass, Sergey Kushilkin - drums), in 1998 together with bass guitarist Oleg Petrikov the group "NewTone"), performed and recorded in the studio with jazz stars visiting Siberia - David Goloshchekin, Igor Butman, Valery Ponomarev, Arkady Shilkloper, Valery Kolesnikov, Joe Locke, Tommy Campbell, Jane Parker, Tim Armacost, Bill Skeet, Richie Cole, Jesse Jones and took part in regional jazz festivals (Tomsk, Angarsk, Irkutsk, Novokuznetsk, Surgut, Krasnoyarsk, Abakan).
For two years (1999-2001) he lived and worked in the city of Surgut, where he was the musical director of the jazz ensemble "Resonance", based in the Palace of Arts "Neftyanik". At that time, the ensemble included: saxophonist Nikolai Semenov, trumpeter Pavel Zotov, guitarist Anatoly Serputko, bassists Sergei Polyakov, Vladimir Arabodzhi, Vladimir Burmetov, drummers Igor Polyakov and Vyacheslav Kalmazan, vocalists Nikolai Figurov and Alexander Zalyubich. During this time, several complex programs were prepared by the members of the ensemble, with whom the musicians performed in nearby cities - Nizhnevartovsk, Khanty-Mansiysk, Nefteyugansk.
In 2001, Alexey returned to Novosibirsk and assembled a quintet playing classical bebop, to which, in addition to the experienced D. Averchenkov and O. Petrikov, he invited young and very promising musicians - saxophonist Nikolay Panchenko and drummer Artem Fedotov.
Since 2003, he has lived permanently in Moscow. During this time, he has established himself on the jazz scene of the capital as a bright and original musician. Together with guitarist Pavel Chekmakovsky, he puts together the ensemble "Le Group", becomes a permanent partner of David Goloshchekin (ensemble "Four"), collaborates with the best Moscow performers and with musicians coming from abroad, including Jimmy Cobb, Vincent Herring, Deborah Brown, Richie Cole, Bobby Watson, Marcus Strickland, Abraham Burton, Frank Lacy, Don Braden, Yotam Zilberstein, Ronnie Burrage, Joe Ford, E.J.Strickland, Arturo Stable, Ludwig Afonso, Marshall Keys, Bobby Martinez, Craig Handy, Mike Stern, Bob Malach, Miles Griffith, Ryan Kisor, Jeremy Pelt, J.D.Walter, Jason Palmer, Hendrick Meurkens, Rudy Royston, Mark Whitfield Jr., Mark Shim, Colin Stranahan, Alex Sipiagin, Ari Hoenig and many others. In 2006, Alexey became one of the organizers of the Jazz Express in Tver festival. Thanks to this project, Tver jazz lovers heard and saw the Larry Corriell trio, Hiram Bullock Band, Wayne Escoffery quartet, Abraham Burton-Vitaly Golovnev quintet, Ryan Keazor quartet, Man Sound vocal group, Lera Gehner Band, Valery Ponomarev-Don Braden quintet, and vocalist Miles Griffith.
In October 2008, as part of the Crossing Rhythms project, a tour of 18 concerts took place in 12 Russian cities with the participation of New York saxophonist Abraham Burton.
In March-April 2011, the “Golden Tour” of David Goloshchekin’s ensemble “Four” took place, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Maestro’s creative activity.
Now Alexey has put together his new quartet, with which he went on seven major tours with American jazz stars during 2012-2015: harmonica player Hendrik Meurkens, trumpeter Jason Palmer, drummer Rudy Royston, and vocalists Jonae Kendrick and Vanisha Gould.
In November 2015, the Staple project went on a month-long tour, which included Alexey, saxophonist Mark Shim, drummer Colin Stranahan, and double bassist Yuri Galkin.
Since 2016 to the present day, Alexey has organized 11 more tours with the participation of stars of the world jazz scene: April-May 2016 - Shenel Johns & Vitaly Golovnev Quartet, August 2016 - Radovan Tarishka and Alexey Podymkin Trio, October-November 2016 - Godwin Louis and Alexey Podymkin Trio, March, August and October 2017 - Rosario Giuliani Quartet, April 2017 - Alex Sipyagin Quartet with the participation of Ari Honig, October-November-December 2017 - Robert Anchipolovsky-Alexey Podymkin Quartet, April 2018 - Anastasia Lyutova and "Lyuty Band", July-August 2018 - Chad Quintet Lefkowitz-Brown, August 2018 — Rick Margitza International Quintet, November-December 2018 — Robbie Pate and Alexey Podymkin Quartet, February-March 2019 — Alexey Podymkin International Quintet.
On January 30, 2019, a jubilee concert dedicated to Alexey's 50th birthday took place, in which his Siberian friends Dmitry Averchenkov and Oleg Petrikov, Alexey's student Nestor Smyshlyaev and famous Russian musicians (David Goloshchekin, Viktor Epaneshnikov, Sergey Baulin, Alina Rostotskaya, Anastasia Lyutova, Makar Novikov, Maxim Shibin, Vladimir Koltsov-Krutov, David Tkebuchava, Nikolay Kulikov, Alexey Bekker, Roman Sokolov, Makar Kashitsyn, Mikhail Fotchenkov, Mikhail Maryshev, Dmitry Taranov) and outstanding foreign guests - Jason Palmer, Baptiste Erbin, Radovan Tarishka, Robert Anchipolovsky took part.
2019 as a whole turned out to be very eventful. In addition to the anniversary concert, he was marked by three significant tours: in February-March, as part of an international quintet with the participation of trumpeter Andrey Lobanov, Israeli alto saxophonist Robert Anchipolovsky, American drummer Darrell Green and double bass player Vladimir Koltsov-Krutov, more than 25 performances took place at concert venues in Russia, Germany and Israel.
In August, Alexey organized a tour with the participation of Eric Alexander, one of the most sought-after modern tenor saxophonists.
In November-December, a long and meaningful tour took place, geographically covering almost all of Russia, with the participation of the amazing French alto saxophonist Baptiste Urban, in which also took part wonderful Russian musicians - vocalist Anastasia Lyutova, double bass player Daria Chernakova (who also sings Brazilian music beautifully) and young drummer Mikhail Fotchenkov.
Also, in June, Alexey took part in the recording of Oleg Tumanov's album "On the Way From Brazil" as a producer and performer. The album was created with the participation of real stars of Brazilian music - vocalists Leila Pinheiro, Joyce, Jane Duboc, Luciana Alves, Celso Fonseca, Moska, saxophonists Idriss Boudrioua, Marcelo Martins, trumpeters Bruno Santos, Altair Martins, Jesse Sadock, Aquiles Moraes, trombonist Rafael Rocha (who also wrote all the arrangements for the album), percussionist Dada Costa, and Baptiste Herbin took part in the recording as a special guest.
The album presentation took place in Rio de Janeiro in January 2020 and then in Moscow in February.
The Moscow presentation took place on the stage of the MMDM Theater Hall. It featured Brazilian vocalists Marques Moyseis, Luciana Alves, Paula Santoro, musicians who flew in specially from Brazil and Europe - trombonist Rafael Rocha, saxophonist Idriss Boudrioua, drummer Mauro Martins, bassist Dudu Penz, percussionist Dada Costa, as well as Russian musicians - trumpeter Andrey Lobanov, saxophonist Sergey Baulin, guitarist Maxim Shibin and Anton Zaletayev, who performed all the flute parts in this program.
Then some of the invited musicians, led by Alexey, went on a short concert tour of Russian cities.
